What skills have You developed throughout this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Project management skills are one of the most important ones throughout this project.I have learned how to collaborate and work with different ideas at once and how to set deadlines and meet deadlines. We got to show our ideas out there in the real world and I have learned the importance of team play and depending. Even though in the beginning of the year I remember having a comment from Amber Smith that working with that many brief in collaboration might be risky and I agree that it is and were and yet again I am proud to say that all the collaborations have worked out and saw the end line even though from within s**t might have happened. Tamarillo is one of them. Me and Suzanne found it easy to share responsibilities and communicate with the band. The band was so happy with the work produced that this collaboration will extend further in the future. The hardest bit was the last “Came&Went” music video collaboration that involved a lot of planning which I was responsible for. yet again everything worked out wel land we even managed to use social media in the right was of finding the dancer and were sponsored by sandwhich.co.uk and chiarafashion.com.

Concept development - the Tamarillo identity has developed through the year in so many different ways. It was probably the most conceptual piece that I have ever worked on personally. The concept itself was a concept within. It being innovative and interactive and requesting the audience to engage with the piece and the band.

Working with a client - Tamarillo is a start up band that is close to my heart and personally I dealt with the client as with a friend and in every step of the way tried to inform him about any decision making. It proved that having the ‘client’ on your side proved to be useful and less stressful. Also we could take more risks and have less stress if anything went wrong.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on them?

Collaboration is definitely one of my strengths. I love working with many different people. In the future I am planning to work alone a bit more just so I would be confident in working both ways as collaboration I do not find a struggle anymore I want to capitalise and gain confidence in working alone as I see how that would benefit in collaborative work as well. I also learned that logo design is actually one of my favourite parts of branding and identity which I only discovered through this project. I’m aiming to work with more start-ups in the future which will lead identity and branding skill development. I also realised that without note-making I could possibly forget and leave my head - more of that in the future (note making).

There are two types of people in the industry - the ones that start and the ones that finish. I am definitely the one that starts. I don’t find it hard to start and motivate a new project or in this case music video. At the beginning of the idea I’m the one who will arrange, meet, talk, find and make but once the end comes - I need a push to finish off. I should probably address this in my future career and not make myself feel bad about not being able to finish but constantly wanting to start. yet again I will not let this be an excuse to never finish anything, actually trough the summer I am going to finish off all my projects on my own so I can grow as a creative and push myself outside my comfort zone.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Initiate more - talk less. It’s an important life practice that I have learned through the year. Talking can only be worth if you want to become a lecturer or a public speaker (which is a very useful skill that I definitely will practice in the future for the future TED talk) but if you want to get stuff done. Plan & action. In every project there has to be an initiator and I don’t mind being that as I do not give up after a defeat (Gold Again) and rather than feeling bad about an idea I move on and do an even better one.

2. Ask people for help even if you scared that you might not get it. The only way to move forward is to ask people. ask for help, ask for support or ask for money. I am still dealing with overcoming myself every single time I ask for help. Being brave and sometimes bold is not something that comes naturally. I think the only thing separating from asking for a favour and not being able to be confident about your abilities is when when people ask and if they don’t get the expected answer they give up or even worse fail. Always have a plan b and never ask people to do something that you would not be willing to do. That’s just lazy really.

3. Don’t control and don’t make up rules. As I got to work in collaboration I learned to let go and yet sometimes i do try to control and sometimes it doesn’t always end up well. I am still learning. I hope in the future I will do less control You need to trust the people you work with meaning the people you do the work for and the people that do the work with you/. Everyone has a clear idea of what they are doing. let them live their dreams as well as you're living yours.

4. Have arguments earlier. One wise person has told me that an argument is a way to check your friendship and if it crumbles - it was not strong enough. Once communication goes down - you lose collaboration. I wish I had more arguments with the people I worked with.

5. Make sure you notice peoples accomplishments and effort. Team work only works well if everyone is putting their full effort into it and trusts each other so it’s very important everyone get’s recognised for it.

This was a very interesting finding that Suzanne has shared with me - a commercial for Spirograph that I find amusing and entertaining.

Primo Graph is another way of structured drawing of the spirographs. We might not be able to explore each individual way of structured drawing but it has been useful in the practice of deciding which ones are worth using and which ones are not.

We chose these videos for their visual variety, post production and suitability. These videos inspired us in creating our own future final video for one of the Tamarillo videos.

John Maeda still remembers a parent-teacher conference from when he was a child. Maeda beamed with pride as his teacher told his father, “John is good at math and art.” However, the next day, when Maeda’s father recounted the conference to a customer at his store, all he remembered was, “John is good at math.”

Maeda, now the President of the Rhode Island School of Design, shares in this hilarious talk from TEDGlobal 2012 that one of the central questions of his life became: “Why did dad not say ‘art?’”

Maeda’s studies in math and computing took him to MIT, his father’s dream. But he eventually realized that he had to follow his own passions and enrolled in art school. It was there that he began to see common space between the areas of study.

“I began to think about the computer as a spiritual place of thinking. I was influenced by performance art,” says Maeda, before sharing one of his earliest works — a computer enacted by people. “When people say, ‘I don’t get art. I don’t get it all,’ that means art is working.  Art is supposed to be enigmatic … Art is about asking questions — questions that might not be answerable.”

A DIY made laser spirograph that we will not be trying out regarding time and technical skills but it's an interesting way to create a spirograph and to maybe use it in concerts rather than just a projection.

Brief 1. Tamarillo. Light drawings

Light painting is the process of using one or more light sources to fill in a single exposure to create a unique image. If you think of the light like a pencil to paper and then add tools like a Spirograph to the situation you might understand what exactly I am doing.

The light wheel is actually pretty simple and you can get pretty creative with it on the fly. It is made up of a bicycle wheel (any size, however I have found that a 20” BMX bike wheel is a good size), A set of battery operated LED string lights. (These can be purchased from eBay or if you are lucky around October through March you can pick them up at Target or IKEA (any store that sells Christmas stuff is likely to have them). The lights are attached using black electrical tape and I used a bike peg I had laying around as the handle.

Conventional and re-usable ways to create a hand made Spirograph set using an old CD ram if sprayed and displayed right - that could save money and allow us to work on a low budget.

These are the snapshots of the original videos. We used a lot of them for Tamarillo banners and profile pictures to start things moving towards the branding and start building up excitement. We used a scientific approach to create the visuals so in a way mimicking the concept of the logo structured creativity and  the final results were just great:

We used the photography studio space to shoot the video in and spend hours just experimenting and creating different patters and textures by using milk, washing liquid and food coloring. Even thought this technique has been used before but no one as of now has created a music video out of it.

A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. When a pendulum is displaced sideways from its restingequilibrium position, it is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it back toward the equilibrium position. When released, the restoring force combined with the pendulum's mass causes it tooscillate about the equilibrium position, swinging back and forth. The time for one complete cycle, a left swing and a right swing, is called theperiod. The period depends on the length of the pendulum and also on the amplitude of the oscillation. However, if the amplitude is small, the period is almost independent of the amplitude.

An easy to use harmonograph drawing machine. These happy Gators allow for quick and easy setup on any table or desk.

A beautiful set of  posters that uses installation and Spirograph art to create a visual story. I like the use of craft and detail and personally by already trying to get our own spirographs draw it's a very crafty and beautiful spirograps that they got.

A project done by Danny & Mirela of tracing parabolic speakers was an interesting investigation of sound and applied mathematics.

Since we’re also doing another project that’s related to parabolic speakers, we figured let’s do this one together - and simultaneously work on the Harmonograph-project too, see pictures below for the book I showed in class.

In the first project we’ll make parabolic speakers (probably 2) that ‘follow’ the people walking around in the installation. So, beams of audio will be directed to the person, and he/she will hear it while other people (not standing in the beam) hear much less - if anything. 

In the Touch Harmonographs project, we’ll try to make an ‘environment’ where people can create harmonographs on the walls (floor?) by drawing a line with their fingers/hand. A corresponding sound will be created.

    

Week 1. Try to make some harmonograph graphics (hooked to mouse dragged). Upload a screen-capture.

Week 2. Make some sounds correspond with the graphics. (Octave, Chords, see harmonograph booklet). Finish watching Theo’s VideoManager Class Tutorial & start writing classes ourselves.

Week 3. Begin making tools for a touchscreen (Ir camera, Ir lights, surface?). Decide whether to let the walls be as they are - or to put something there to deform the projections. Reserve a beamer (Rental)!

Christmas break?

Week 4. Finishing up the code - testing & trying to make it crash, etc. etc.

Week 5. Making the complete test setup. Fix last problems that occur.

Week 6. Complete project.

Tracking Parabolic Speakers:

week 1 - Looking up examples of parabolic speakers - tutorials maybe? First dish tests (speaker + dish & one speaker in tube - picture + video coming soon!)

week 2 - See how to make the arduino + 2 servo’s work with O_F. How to make 2 arduino’s work at the same time? Look for steppermotor-chips. Post more stuff on the blog - pictures/video/progress.

week 3 - Start writing code for face/blob/? -detection - how to track people the most efficient way, etc. 

Christmas break?

week 4 - Make first test-setting - complete writing the code & assembling servo’s + arduino(’s). Final decision which audio to use.

week 5 - Finishing up - testing.

week 6 - Complete project

Spin Painting is another interesting way of creating a spirographic image we could use this as a way to try different techniques to create a spirographic image that then later on would be transferred on to logo.

When I first started talking with Troy about the future of Tamarillo and his plans of staying in Leeds, living with Lewis and creating music for the band in order to kick it off. I looked at the band and it didn't have much going on. The visual design was made by Lewis and was used as their identity.
